Developing maker-movement-inspired training courses in renewable energy sources for Gaza Strip – Palestine | MakingFutureEnergy4Palestine Project Coordinator Prof. Dr. Christoph Pfeifer Coordinating Institution University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU), Vienna Partner Institutions Islamic University of Gaza (IUG) (Prof. Dr. Hala El‐Khozondar) Project Duration 1 February 2017 – 31 January 2020 Contact [email protected] [email protected] Fact sheet: Transfer of knowledge, technologies and socio‐economic competence is urgently needed in Gaza. The proposed collaboration between the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) and Islamic University of Gaza (IUG) aims at establishing a basis for an academic partnership on renewable energy technology. The objectives of the project are as follows: 1. Development of curricula and training programmes based on maker‐movement inspired educational modules for renewable energy with special focus on female students. 2. Development of a renewable energy laboratory and a research group on renewable energy related issues at IUG. 3. Enhancement of the abilities of faculty members in these issues to convey the most recent information to the students. 4. Set-up of an academic network for a young generation of researchers and fieldworkers from the Gaza Strip of Palestine and from Austria. The overall aim of the project is the improvement of the capacity building of students and academic staff at IUG in Gaza and BOKU as well, especially focusing on the female gender. The intended partnership will set up the renewable energy laboratory and maker‐movement inspired training courses at IUG, where students create own projects in renewable energy technologies. The approach is to share experiences and work together on strategies to implement gender‐specific courses, which are tailored towards the situation in Palestine. Also, the project will establish cooperations with high‐schools and maker communities in Palestine in order to create awareness for the innovative energy engineering approach put forward by the engineering faculty of IUG through the APPEAR programme of the Austrian Development Cooperation. This project will contribute to the national strategy to use renewable energy sources as an alternative to the traditional sources to solve the energy crisis in Palestine and in particular in Gaza and to protect the environment. Moreover, a significant contribution to the economy by green jobs can be expected based on our experience in middle Europe. To achieve the aim of the project, a powerful and multidisciplinary team of researchers from Gaza and Austria has been established.
